What Type of Boat Dock is Best for You?

The type of boat dock you choose plays a big role in the safety of your vessel and the  enjoyment you get from boating. When it comes to boat dock construction, aesthetics are as important as functionality. A durable, well-crafted dock should complement the look of any waterfront as well as suit all your boating needs. Selecting a visually appealing dock that does not require much maintenance is easy once you know what to look for.

There are several varieties of boat docks to choose from, and each offers a different advantage. The main types are floating, stationary and portable docks. Floating docks are ideal for deep water or areas that see frequent changes in water levels. They may be secured by cables, anchors or ramps. The most stable designs include platforms that intersect with the main walkway. When it comes to consulting with deck builders, Virginia and Texas experts can provide valuable information about each style.

A stationary or standing boat dock is ideal for most boating needs. Stationary docks can withstand the roughest conditions because of their permanent bases. However, if you have a weak retaining wall and do not want to invest in shoreline stabilization, a portable or wheeled dock may be a better choice. Portable docks are perfect for areas of water that freeze in the cold seasons. The wheels allow you to easily transport the dock when necessary.

When it comes to choosing boat dock materials, consider your location. For example, a Texas boat dock may require different construction than a Rhode Island one. Wood is the traditional choice because it adds a natural, rustic beauty to any waterfront. The downside is that it needs regular maintenance. Aluminum or polyethylene docks are sturdy alternatives to wood. These low-maintenance docks won’t rot or rust, and they can withstand major impacts. Docks built from a combination of wood and aluminum can provide both the desired aesthetic of a wooden dock and the stability of a metal dock.

The right boat dock should match your lifestyle, location and personal taste. You can choose one with a convenient slip dock or a spacious walkway for leisurely pursuits. A knowledgeable boat dock builder can help you determine what design is best for you. Which dock will you choose to meet your boating needs?

Different Types of Boathouses and Their Uses

boat house Boathouses can be built on land or water. Wood, concrete and steel are used for boathouse and boat dock construction. Since cedar is very resistant to water, it is a common wood choice. There are several different styles of boathouses to consider. While some are simple shelters for watercraft, others may include special amenities found in homes.

1. Shed

Often located on land, this type of boathouse is usually large enough to accommodate a boat and its equipment. Since they are small, sheds are typically used for canoes, kayaks and other small boats. There are usually no amenities such as running water or plumbing, but they do offer adequate protection from wind and rain.

2. Canopy

These boat shelters are a simple choice. They may be built on the water or on a deck. Basic canopies include support columns and a roof. However, canopies must be customized to provide full enclosure. People who live in areas where weather plays a factor choose to enclose one or more sides, which protects the housed watercraft from the elements. Those searching for deck builders in Virginia will want to find someone who specializes in building a canopy structure that can protect their watercraft in times of severe weather.

3. Commercial

Commercial boathouses may have attractions, restaurants or living quarters. Because they house fully-operational businesses, the structures are much larger than typical boathouses. Some companies offer tours, rentals and dinner cruises. Owners should be aware of all local and state codes. Texas boat dock codes may be different than Virginia boat dock codes.

4. Residential

In addition to providing boat storage, this type of structure includes living quarters. There are several different sizes of residential boathouses. They usually include plumbing, electricity and other conveniences. Watercrafts are usually stored in a garage below the residential portion of the structure. While many residential boathouses are located near the water, those located partially on the water must have a special flood-proof platform.

Anyone considering these projects must consult an experienced boat dock builder. There are many issues to address before starting a project. For example, a good shoreline stabilization plan is important for protecting the structure. To choose the best type for you, consider whether you need a basic structure or something more elaborate.

The First Steps in Cleaning Up After a Hurricane

In the aftermath of a hurricane, it is easy to get overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done. The most important thing homeowners and business owners can do initially, however, is basic clean up. Taking care of this task sets the stage for the more extensive repairs that will likely be needed, and clean up will make it safe to return to one’s home or business.

Downed trees will likely need to be removed in order to restore full access to a property. In removing trees, it is particularly important to make sure they are not touching power lines. If a tree is touching a power line, it is wise to make sure the utility company moves the line before sawing the tree into pieces and moving it. Waterfront properties in Virginia or Texas may have suffered damage to their docks from fallen trees. After the trees are moved, Waterfront Construction and Design can help repair these structures.

After access to a property is restored through the removal of fallen trees and other debris, it is important to clean the interiors of buildings if they have been soaked with rain. Pull up wet carpet so that mold does not have a chance to grow. Drain standing water in the boathouse to prevent damage to boat dock construction. Virginia residents with docks will want to contact Waterfront Construction & Design so that the company’s engineers can determine what kind of further repairs may be necessary.

It is important to wear gloves, long pants, and closed toed shoes while cleaning up debris. Sharp edges and unseen hazards will be abundant, including splinters and exposed nails from debris. Give us a call should you need any assistance.

Waterfront Construction Welcomes the Spud Barge

Waterfront Construction is excited to announce a new addition to the team that will increase the efficiency of our building process and allow us to move equipment and materials in the water rather than through your lawn: The spud barge is a 20 feet wide by 40 feet long red spud barge. The spud barge is used to haul equipment and materials through the water as opposed to on land. This means that we are able to avoid dragging our heavy equipment through a yard, but instead can carry them with us in the water.

A spud barge is a kind of marine vessel that is capable of providing a solid, stable work platform in waterfront construction operations. Each spud on the barge consists of a heavy-duty pipe that is driven into the bottom of the river, lake or ocean for increased stability when working with heavy equipment in waterfront construction projects. Spud barges can be used for a variety of purposes in a variety of environments, making it an ideal addition to our fleet.

Before we had the spud barge we had to get our equipment to the shoreline through the property of our clients. Now, we are able to load all our materials and equipment on the spud barge so that your lawn will be safe from our heavy equipment. On top of keeping your lawn safer, these spud barges will allow us to complete projects more efficiently, meaning we can work faster to allow you the opportunity to enjoy your new boat dock or pier sooner.

Whether you need a new boat dock, a pier or shore stabilization, see how the spud barge can help make your dream project become a reality faster!
